Japan and Korea Set Highest Tweet Rate for New Year
As the clock was striking midnight in GMT+9 (Tokyo and Seoul’s neighbourhood) 33,338 tweets were sent per second, a rate which was 2.5 times more than any other timezone. Twitter user @Trebor subsequently created this graphic which, for many readers, will probably be the first time in a while you’ve seen red circles on a map resembling something other than earthquakes. North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un recently sent a handwritten letter to a ‘naturalised’ Japanese woman in North Korea and the media has cynically portrayed this moment of thoughtfulness as an attempt to remind Tokyo there are Japanese living in North Korea.
